لقد كانت أفريقيا حتى أوائل القرن الثامن عشر لا تزال في نظر الغرب قارة شبه مجهولة، إذ تحكمت ظروفها الطبيعية في حركة الكشف عن أجزائها.
إن ساحلها لا يشجع أبداً على إختراقها، فأجزاء طويلة منه يكاد لا يوجد بها مكان واحد تستطيع السفن أن تلجأ إليه، ولهذا كانت موانئها الطبيعية قليلة إلا في الشمال.
وتظاهر الصحاري وأشباهها نصف سواحل القارة تقريباً، وتظاهر الغابات الكثيفة معظم الجزء الباقي، وهي غايات يصعب إختراقها، بل ربما استحال في بعض الأحيان.
ومع أن بوركهارت أقام فترة طويلة في مصر العليا بين رحلتيه النوبيتين، وأنفق ما يقرب من عامين في رحلاته الأفريقية الآسيوية، إلا أنّ هذا لم يكن سبباً في ضياع أي فرصة للوصول إلى هدفه الأساسي، فلم تقم من مصر أي قافلة تسلك الإتجاه الغربي إلى ليبيا الجنوبية خلال مدة تغيبه عن القاهرة.
وخلال الفترة المضجرة التي كان محتوماً عل بوركهارت أن يقضيها في مصر العليا استمر متخفياً في زي تاجر مسلم بسيط، وكان شديد الحرص على ألاَّ يكشف أمره أو تُعرف أغراضه، ولم يستطع أن يغادر إسنا إلا في 2 مارس / آذار سنة 1814 ليبدأ رحلته النوبية التالية.
وكان من الصعب عليه بعد أن ترك دراو أن يجد الفرصة الكافية لكتابة مذكراته وتسجيل ملاحظاته، وكان أكثر صعوبة من هذا أن يبعث برسالته إلى الجمعية حتى وصل إلى سواكن ومنها عبر البحر الأحمر إلى بلاد العرب، ومن جدة أرسل إلى السير جوزيف بانكس بخطاب مؤرّخ في 7 أغسطس / آب سنة 1814 يصف فيه الطريق الذي سلكه وأهم المعلومات التي جمعها خلال رحلته النوبية الثانية، تلك الرحلة التي لم تصل المعلومات المفصلة عنها إلى الجمعية إلا في سنة 1816 وهي التي تكوّن الجزء الأكبر من هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا.
