استخدمت -كلمة طائفة- اشتقاقاً من معناها اللغوي للدلالة على جماعة تمارس مهنة مشتركة، واختلف مسماها في مصر والشام إبان العصر المملوكى فأطلق عليها لفظ "الجماعة" في حين أطلق علي ذويها في العصر العثمانى لقب "أرباب الحرف" وقد شكلوا ما يشبه الطائفة من حيث خضوع أصحاب المهنة الواحدة لسلطة أحد المشايخ، واتباطهم معاً بما يعود بالنفع عليهم في تحصيل أرزاقهم وحفظ كيانهم.
واستمرت طوائف الحرف في فترة الحكم العثمانى، بعد أن ترك العثمانيون الأهالي يدبرون أمورهم بأنفسهم فتولوا تنظيم حياتهم بعيداً عن تدخل الدولة.
واتسم ذلك العصر بالمرونة فى انتقال أحد أفراد طائفة ما إلى طائفة أخري بحسب ميوله واستعداده.
وقد اتخذ الباشا محمد علي نظام الاحتكار كوسيلة لهيمنة الدولة علي الموارد الاقتصادية لتويل متطلبات التنمية بعد أن رأى أن القوة الاقتصادية هي الأساس الوحيد للقوة السياسية، وقد أدى نجاح محمد علي في التنمية الاقتصادية إلي الحاجة إلي مهن القبانية والكيالين والسماسرة والشيالين والصيارفة.
