يطلق الباحثون في فلسفة هسرل على كتابه "الفلسفة علماً دقيقاً" اسم "مقال اللوغوس" نسبة إلى مجلة "اللوغوس" التي نشر فيها, وهناك ما يشبه الإجماع بين الباحثين على أهمية هذا المقال في تفكير هسرل, يتجلى ذلك في تلك الأوصاف التي تطلق عليه؛ فمن قائل بأنه "أشبه شيء ببيان الحركة الظاهرياتية كلها", ومن قائل بأنه "بمثابة الصخرة التي يقوم عليها كل تفكير هسرل". إن تصور العلم الذي يبدأ منه هسرل هو تصور أفلاطون وديكارت والنزعة العقلية في القرن السابع عشر عامة للعلم, وهذا التصور الذي يتوجه نحو الأسس الأولى والمعايير اللامشروطة يختلف من حيث الأساس عن التصور الحديث للعلم التجريبي, بل يختلف عن التصور الحديث للعلم عموماً, فالعلم بالمعنى الأفلاطوني هو العلم المطلق, هو المعرفة المطلقة, ويتميز أساساً بأنه حدس للماهيات, كما أن الظاهريات- عند هسرل- تقوم على حدس الماهيات في مقابل العلوم التجريبية التي تقوم على الوقائع؛ فالمشروع الظاهرياتي لإقامة الفلسفة بوصفها علماً دقيقاً يفترض- بل ويتأسس على- هذه التفرقة بين الواقعة والماهية.
