يعمل "داستون" مساعدا للسيناتور الأمريكي ومديراً للدعاية الانتخابية لترشيحه رئيساً للبلاد عن حزبه وهو شاب صارم يعشق عمله ويرتبط ارتباطاً وثيقاً بالسيناتور الذي يثق فيه ويقربه مما أثار حفيظة أبنائه وخاصة ابنته الوحيدة "شارون" والتي ناصبته العداء منذ أن عمل مع السيناتور والدها منذ عشر سنوات وفي إحدى ليلي أغسطس في عام الترشيح للسينارتور لإنتاخابات الرئاسة يصحبها "داستون" إلى شقتها الخاصة بعد أن قضت يوماً مشحوناً بالعمل واللهو والشراب وفي لحظة ضعف تستسلم له وعندما تفيق تطرده شر طردة ثم تكتشف بعد ذلك أنها حملت منه طفلاً. يتأزم الموقف بالنسبة لـ"شارون" وهي موزعة ما بين خوفها من الفضيحة التي ستؤثر -دون شك- على الحملة الانتخابية لوالدها، وبين كراهيتها لمدير الحملة وتتعاقب الأحداث لتكتشف الشابة في النهاية أن الرجل كان يحبها منذ أن رآها لأول مرة حباً صادقاً. وتجري أحداث مثيرة حتى نهاية الرواية.
رأت "شارون" "داستون" يكزّ على فكيه وقبضته تشتد على عجلة القيادة وهي تقترب منه. عادت إلى ذهنها كلمات المربية "جريس" فجأة: "أنت لا تكفين أبداً عن تعذيب هذا الولد المسكين" تساءلت "شارون" هل حقاً أعذبه.. إنه سؤال محرج جعلها تزفر زفرة حارة. همست:
-هيا! قل لي يا "داستون"! أخذت "داستون" نفساً عميقاً قبل أن ينطلق في الشرح:
-لم يكن لدي أبداً عاطفة الإنتماء لشخص أو شيء ما في العالم.. لقد تربيت وكبرت وسط عائلات كبيرة متعاقبة وكلها كانت تبدي نحوي عطفاً ولكني لم أحس أبداً بأنني داخل أسرتي.
