إن كانت "الصورة تعادل ألف كلمة" فإن تلك العبارة لا تنطبق إلا على الصورة الجيدة فقط، تلك التي تضيف للموضوع الصحفي أو الشرح الذي تقدمه الكلمات ومن التي لا تكرر وما بداخل النص.. والصورة وثيقة الصلة بالموضوع، وهي الجزء المكمل للعادة الصحفية أو الإعلامية المقدمة في الصحف، فلا يمكن للقارئ أو حتى الناظر للصحفية أن يقرأ خبراً صحفياً دون أن يكون بقربها صورة موضحة للحدث، فهي ليست بالضرورة أن تكرر ناقلة للحدث بكافة تفاصيله بقدر ضرورة تعبيرها عن الواقع بصدق وعفوية.
وتختزل الصورة أحداثاً يجلس الصحفي ساعات وساعات في كتابتها، لتخرج بعد ذلك صفحات وصفحات، آتية مع الخبر على شكل توثيق للحدث، إلا أنها في كثير من الأحيان تختصر على القارئ قراءة العادة، وكل ذلك يعتمد على المصور الصحفي والذي يجب عليه أن يتمتع بعدة صفات تؤطه أن يكون مصوراً صحفياً ماهراً.. وتبرز أهمية دور الصحفي وقت الأزمات، وهي التي تظهر أيضاً جرأته على توثيق الحدث إذا كان مؤلماً كما في الحروب، وهنا نشاهد جمالية الصورة الصحفية والتي تنبع من فهم المصور وقدرته على إظهار أكثر الأشياء تعبيراً عن الحدث.
