لقد بدأت الاستفادة من الحقائق النفسية في المجالات المتعددة لممارسة السياسة مع بداية ممارسة الإنسان للسياسة، أي قبل ظهور علم النفس باعتباره علماً. وعلى سبيل المثال، فقد عرف البشر الحرب النفسية ومارسوها منذ عرفوا ومارسوا الحرب بأشكالها المختلفة، أي منذ فجر التاريخ، رغم أن المصطلح لم يبدأ تداوله إلا مع نذر الحرب العالمية الأولى، بعد أن تطورت الممارسة القديمة من صرخة توقع الرعب في قلب العدو، أو تثير الشجاعة في قلب المهاجم، إلى أن أصبحت على ما نشهده اليوم من منشورات وإذاعات ومحطات بث تلفزيوني، إلى آخر تلك الخطط الفنية المعقدة التي يضعها المتخصصون في فروع الحرب النفسية.
ويعتبر علم النفس السياسي، بشكل بالغ العمومية، وكما ورد في هذا الكتاب، "تطبيقاً لعلم النفس البشري في دراسة السياسة، حيث يستفيد علم النفس السياسي من منجزات علم النفس في مجال النظريات النفسية، وبحوث الشخصية، والأمراض النفسية، وعلم النفس الاجتماعي، وعلم نفس النمو، وعلم النفس المعرفي، والعلاقات داخل الجماعات؛ كما يتناول علم النفس السياسي ظواهر سياسية مثل السير الذاتية، والقيادة، والسلوك السياسي الجماهيري، وتأثيرات الإعلام الجماهيري والتنشئة السياسية والتربية المدنية، والصراع الدولي، واتخاذ القرارات في مجال السياسة الدولية، وحل الصراعات، والصراعات القائمة على العرق والنوع الاجتماعي والقومية وغير ذلك من تجمعات، والتيارات السياسية، والحراك السياسي".
