هذا الكتاب هو شرح مُبسَّط سهل لكتاب الإمام ابن قدامة المقدسي "روضة الناظر"، وذكرتْ الكاتبة في مقدمتها للكتاب أن ابن قدامة قد بنى كتابه على كتاب "المستصفى" للغزالي، حيث نقلَ كثيرًا من نصوصه وألفاظه، ورتَّبه على أبوابٍ، مع تصرفٍ فيه بترتيب العبارات، حتى إنه تبعه في إضافة المقدمة المنطقية إلى كتابه، والتي كانت مثار انتقاد له من بعض العلماء، حتى قيل: إنه حذفها فيما بعد من بعض النسخ.
وقد قال بعض علماء الحنابلة: "الروضة مختصر من المستصفى". وقد اعتنى فيه ابن قدامة بآراء الإمام أحمد وأصحابه حتى قال عنه ابن بدران: «إنه أنفع كتاب لمن يريد تعاطي الأصول من أصحابنا، فمقام هذا الكتاب بين كتب الأصول مقام "المقنع" بين كتب الفروع».
وقد تبع "ابن قدامة" الغزالي أيضًا في ترتيب أدلة الأحكام، فجعلها على هذا النحو: كتاب الله تعالى، ثم سنّة رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم، ثم الإجماع، ثم دليل العقل المبقي على النفي الأصلي، ثم في الأدلة المختلف فيها، وأخَّرَ القياس وجعله في باب: ما يقتبس من الألفاظ، مخالفًا ما عليه جمهور العلماء من المذاهب الأربعة، حيث يجعلون القياس من الأدلة الأربعة المتفق عليها: الكتاب، السنة، الإجماع، القياس.
وبصفة عامة يُعدُّ كتاب "روضة الناظر" من أهم الكتب التي ألِّفت في علم الأصول وفي مذهب الحنابلة بصفة خاصة، حيث كثرت مختصراته وشروحاته والتعليقات عليه.
فكان أول من شرحه ابن المجاور حسن بن محمد النابلسي المتوفى سنة 772 هـ في كتابه "حجية المعقول والمنقول في شرح روضة علم الأصول".
وممن اختصره: أبو الفتح الحنبلي المتوفى سنة 709 هـ في "تلخيص روضة الناظر".
واختصره أيضًا نجم الدين الطوفي المتوفى سنة 716هـ اختصره في كتاب سماه "البلبل في أصول الفقه" طبع بمطبعة النور بالرياض عام 1383هـ.
ثم قام بشرح هذا المختصر شرحًا وافيًا، أضاف إليه أمورًا كثيرة من اجتهاداته، ومن أقول العلماء الآخرين، مما جعل لهذا الشرح أهمية بالغة. وقد حقق هذا الشرح معالي الدكتور عبد الله بن عبد المحسن التركي ونشر بمكتبة مؤسسة الرسالة
وقام بشرح الكتاب والتعليق عليه الشيخ عبد القادر بن أحمد بن مصطفى بدران الدمشقي المتوفى سنة "1346هـ-1920م" وسماه "نزهة الخاطر العاطر شرح روضة الناظر". وكذلك الشيخ محمد الأمين الشنقيطي المتوفى سنة 1393هـ علق عليه في "مذكرة أصول الفقه على روضة الناظر للعلامة ابن قدامة رحمه الله".
