يعد الوقود الطبيعي العادي بأنواعه الصلب والسائل والغازي أحد أهم مصادر الطاقة التي استخدمها ويستخدمها الإنسان، رغم إهتمامه بالطاقات البديلة والمتجددة، لتأمين إحتياجاته المتزايدة من الطاقة، ولا زالت الطاقة الكيميائية للوقود هي المصدر الأساس للحصول على الحرارة اللازمة لتلبية تلك الإحتياجات.
إن التطور المتسارع في الصناعة النفطية مع التطور الإقتصادي للبلدان جعل دور الوقود ينمو بإستمرار، ذلك أن التقدم التقني وآليات تحقيقه يستوجب زيادة مستمرة في الحاجة للطاقة.
كما أن تطور الصناعة عامة ووسائط النقل خاصة وغيرها من نواحي الحياة، يتطلب كميات كبيرة من الوقود خاصة السائل منه، بالإضافة إلى مواد التزليق (زيوت، شحوم) التي لا يمكن الإستغناء عنها، حيث يستهلك منها يومياً مئات الآلاف من الأطنان في كافة أنحاء العالم.
إن نوعية المواد المستخدمة من الوقود والزيوت والشحوم وطريقة إستعمالها وإستهلاكها الصحيح يؤثر بشكل مباشر في أداء مختلف الآليات والمحركات والآلات، كما ويحسّن مردودها.
لذلك، فإن معالجة المسائل التي تتعلق بالوقود والزيوت المعدنية تحتاج إلى دراية وإطلاع قد لا تتوفر لدى الكثير من المهندسين، خصوصاً وأن المعلومات المتعلقة بهذا الموضوع تنتشر في كتب ومراجع ونشرات متفرقة، يحتاج جمعها والربط بينها إلى الكثير من الجهد والوقت.
لهذا تم وضع هذا الكتاب الذي يحتوي على المعلومات الضرورية لتكوين أرضية علمية في هذا المجال ذات نفع مباشر وفائدة كبيرة.
