هذا الكتاب رحلة فريدة قام بها أحمد محمد حسنين بك (1889 - 1947), الذي درس وتخرج في أوكسفورد, وتدرج في مناصب القصر بعد ذلك ليصبح الأمين الأول للديوان الملكي في عهد الملك فاروق وأحد رموز الدولة خلال فترة حكمه.
وكان في صباه شغوفاً بالسفر والترحال حتي إنه عرض علي الملك فؤاد فكرة عبور الصحراء الغربية للبحث عن واحات مفقودة في وسط الصحراء لا يعرف أحد عنها شيئاً, فأعجب الملك بالفكرة, وأمر بأن تتحمل الخزانة المصرية كل نفقاتها.
وفي عام 1923 بدأ رحلته من "السلوم" علي الساحل البحر الأبيض المتوسط, وأتجه صوب الجنوب فوق ظهور الإبل إلي أن وصل في النهاية إلي مدينة "الأبيض" في السودان, وأستغرقت رحلته سبعة أشهر وثلاثة وعشرين يوماً, قطع خلالها مسافة 2.200 ميل تقريباً, ونجح خلالها في أكتشاف واحتين مفقودين لم يصل إليهما أي رحالة من قبل, كما نجح أيضاً في رسم خريطة لتلك المنطقة الممتدة علي طول رحلته, والتي لم تكن هناك أيضاً أية معلومات عنها من قبل, وقد منحته الجمعية الجغرافية الملكية البريطانية نوط الرواد عن هذا الإنجاز, كما وجهت إليه العديد من الجمعيات الجغرافية في دول العالم المختلفة دعوات لإلقاء محاضرات عن رحلته, وما صادفه فيها, وماعثر عليه, وما أنجزه خلالها.
وقد ذكر كل هذا بالإضافة إلي أشياء أخري عديدة في هذا الكتاب.
