وإذ يتتبع ماستناك الأفكار والأحداث التي أدت إلى الحملة الصليبية الأولى, يبين من جديد كيف جرى تصوير المسلمين على أنهم عدو المسيحية من خلال الآليات الأيديولوجية عينها التي وحدت المجتمع المسيحي في الإخاء والسلم. وهو يتناول عمل شخصيات فكرية وروحية بارزة في القرنين الثاني عشر والثالث عشر.
وفي النهاية يستكشف ماستناك أفول الجماعة المسيحية, ليس بسبب انبثاق الممالك والقوى الإقليمية بحد ذاته, وإنما نتيجة للأطماع العالمية التي خامرتها.
