نظرًا لأن اضطرابات النوم متنوعة ومتداخلة الأسباب، من هنا كانت الحاجة ملحة إلى الوصول إلى أسلوب أمثل لأخذ التاريخ المرضي المتعلق بالنوم كخطوة أساسية وهامة للوقوف على التشخيص السليم في مثل هذه الحالات.
على الرغم من أن الأسئلة الخاصة بالنوم والتغييرات التي طرأت عليه تدخل ضمن الفحص العام الذي يقوم به الممارس الغير متخصص أو أخصائيو الأمراض الباطنة والنفسية والعصبية إلا أن ذلك لا يكون كافيًا في معظم الحالات التي يكون فيها اضطراب النوم ملحوظًا ومؤثرًا بدرجة كبيرة في حياة المريض، فهنا يحتاج المريض إلى وقت أطول وربما مقابلة سريرية (إكلينيكية) منفصلة تناقش فيها مشاكل النوم بصورة مفصلة وهنا تبرز أهمية وجود استخبارات مقننة لتقييم النوم واضطراباته.
من ناحية أخرى يعتبر التقييم المقنن للنوم من الأساسيات التي يجب توافرها في البحث العلمي المتعلق بالنوم والاضطرابات الخاصة به. وهو ما نجده في هذا الكتاب.
