لا يكاد المرء يستقر إلى العمل بمصحات الأمراض العقلية والإنصراف إلى ملاحظة نزلائها عن كثب حتى يؤخذ بصفة خاصة بعدد غير قليل منهم، يبدو سلوكهم لأول وهلة على كثير من الصحة والسواء، ولا تتفصح حالتهم العقلية عن أي من تلك المظاهر النوعية التي لا تخطئ في دلالاتها على الإضطراب العقلي.
وإذا يمتد المرء ببصره إلى خارج جدران المصحة، فإنه ليرى عدداً كبيراً من الناس المتفاوقين في العمر والمرتبة الإجتماعية، ممن لا تستقيم حياتهم على سواء ولا تسير إلى نضوج ولا تستقر إلى هدف، وإنهم ليقطعون حياتهم في تخبط عشوائي لا يعرفون معه التبعات الناضجة ولا يتقيدون فيه بأي إلتزام إجتماعي، ويظلون أبداً عنصر هدم وإيذاء لأنفسهم وللغير؛ هؤلاء قلما يعنى أحد يبحث علتهم، بل قلما يدرك أحد أن بهم علة على الإطلاق، وإنهم ليدرجون من ذوي السلوك العدواني أو السلوك المشكل حيناً، ومع أصحاب النزعات الإجرامية المطبوعة حيناً آخر.
فإذا أراد الباحث أن يستهدى في بعض ما غمض عليه من أمر هذه المشكلة، فسيصير - على وفرة ما يلقى - من غموض إلى غموض، وسيرى الخلط والإبهام والإضطراب تعم هذه المشكلة في تحديدها وفي تعليلها وفي علاجها، بل وفي كل ما يمت إليها ويتصل إليها.
هذه هي الحالة السيكوباتية التي يخلطها البعض آنا بالمرض العقلي كما يعرف في إفصاحه النوعي المألوف، ويعدها البعض الآخر مرادفاً للسلوك الإجرامي في كيفما يتبدّى، ويجعلها البعض عنواناً لفساد التربية والإنحلال والتدهور وترخص القيم والمبادئ الخلقية.
وفي صفحات هذا الكتاب محاولة لتجلية مشكلة السيكوباتية من بعض جوانبها، وإنها لتهدف أولاً إلى فصل الحالة السيكوباتية عن كل ما ينسب إليها من مظاهر السلوك القريب الشبه بها، وترمى بعد ذلك إلى إبراز خصائصها وتعيين السمات التي تشير إليها وتدل عليها، ثم تهدف أخيراً أن يجتمع لها من كل هذا ما يسمح بتقديم راي في التعليل تلتقي عنده الخصائص السيكوباتية المميزة إلى منبع واحد في العمليات النفسية المرضية.
