اضطرب عقله، وداعبت خياله أغرب فكرة تصورها مجنون. خيل إليه أن أفضل ما يمكن أن يفعله لخير الدولة ولمجده نفسه هو أن يصبح فارسًا جوالًا، وأن يسيح في الأرض بحثًا عن المغامرات، ليزيل جميع أنواع المظالم معرضًا نفسه لشتى المخاطر، فيبلغ بذلك المجد الخالد. وتخيل هذا النبيل المسكين نفسه وقد توج ملكًا بقوة ساعده، وأن مملكة "تربيزوند" هي أقل ما يمكن أن يطمح إليه، وسط هذه الخواطر السارة التي ملأته بالآمال لم يفكر إلا في شيء واحد وهو أن ينفذ ما يتمناه بكل ما يملك من حماسة وبأسرع وقت ممكن.
أول ما فعله هو صقل السلاح الذي ورثه عن والد جده، بعد أن أكله الصدأ زمنًا طويلًا في زاوية من البيت. فنظفه وأصلحه ما أمكن الإصلاح، لكنه عندما رأى الخوذة ناقصة ولم يبق منها سوى غطاء الجمجمة استخدم الكرتون بمهارة وربط بعضه ببعض وجعل منه خوذة أو على الأقل مظهر الخوذة.
فكر بعد ذلك في حصانه، ومع أن هذا الحيوان المسكين لم يبق منه سوى الجلد والعظام، إلا أنه بدا له في حالة حسنة جدًا بحيث لم يكن ليبادله بجواد الاسكندر أو فرس "السيد". وظل أربعة أيام يبحث عن الاسم الذي سيطلقه عليه، إذ ليس من المعقول، كما كان يقول في نفسه، ألا يكون لحصان فارس مشهور اسم يعرفه الناس جميعًا. ولذلك حاول أن يجد له اسمًا يبين كيف كان الحصان قبل أن يكون حصان الفارس الجوال وكيف صار بعد ذلك. ورأى أنه حين غير وضعه هو، فمن العدل أن يغير اسم حصانه، وأن يتخذ له اسمًا براقًا مناسبًا لمهنته الجديدة. وبعد أن حلم ودار، وأضاف وأنقص، وركب وفكك، سماه أخيرًا "روسينانت"، وهو اسم رائع، برأيه، وباهر، وذو دلالة، وجدير بأول حصان في الدنيا.
بعد أن عثر على اسم جميل لحصانه، فكر أيضًا في العثور عن اسم له نفسه. فقضى ثمانية أيام أخرى وهو يحلم، وأخيرًا سمى نفسه "دون كيشوت".
