حيث إن الخدمة المكتبية تعتمد على ثلاث دعائم رئيسية، وتتمثل الدعامة الأولى في المبنى والتجهيزات، والدعامة الثانية في المجموعات، والدعامة الثالثة في القوى العاملة المؤهلة، وأى خلل في هذه الدعائم الثلاث يؤثر بالسلب على الخدمة المكتبية. وهنا تتأكد أهمية الإعداد المهنى لأمناء المكتبات، إذ أن عليهم يتوقف نجاح الخدمة المكتبية أو فشلها، وكان لى شرف الإسهام بعدد من المحاضرات التي ألقيت على عدد من المتدربين والمتدربات.
ولقد رايت أن أجمع هذه المحاضرات في كتاب واحد لتوسيع نطاق الإطلاع عليها، هذا ويشتمل الكتاب على ثمانية فصول، يتناول الأول علم المكتبات والعلومات وهو فصل تقديمى يتضمن مجالات علم المكتبات وتطور مرحله، وعلاقاته بالعلوم الأخرى، كما يتضمن أهمية المعلومات ونظمها في العصر الحديث، والوعى بأهمية المعلومات ومصدرها ومؤسساتها.
وخصص الفصل الثاني لتاريخ المكتبات في العصور القديمة والعصر الوسيط والعصر الحديث، ويتناول الفصل الثالث وظائف المكتبات وأقسامها وأنواعها، أما الفصل الرابع فقد خصص لموضوع الاتحادات والجمعيات المهنية في مجال المكتبات والمعلومات، ويتناول الفصل الخامس الإعداد المهنى لأمناء المكتبات في الدول الأجنبية والعربية، ويتناول الفصل السادس المكتبات العامة وإدراتها، وفي الفصل السابع موضوع التصنيف في المكتبات.
وفي نهاية الكتاب خصص فصل للمصطلحات الفنية في المكتبات والمعلومات للمبتدئين من طلبة علوم المكتبات، وختاماً آمل أن يستفيد منه التربويون والعاملون في الحقل التعليمي وأمناء المكتبات والعاملون في المكتبات بخاصة.
