الكتاب الذي بين يدي القارئ هو جزء حديثي من كتب الأربعينات التي تداولها كثير من المحدثين والحفاظ بالتصنيف، تبركاً وإتباعا لحديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: "من حفظ أربعين حديثاً..." وإن كان الحديث موضوعاً، إلا أن أحاديث الأربعينات حازت اهتماماً ظاهراً من أهل العلم وطلابه.
وكتاب الأربعين حديثاً في إرشاد السائرين إلى منازل المتقين (من أحلى ما ألف ووضع في هذا النوع) كما قال الإمام السبكي، وهي من مروياته، ومسموعاته، بالرغم من أن كثيراً من الحفاظ صنفوا في هذا الموضوع ومنهم: الإمام أبو طاهر السلفي، والودعاني الموصلي، وأبو نعيم الأصفهاني، والبيهقي، والنووي، والإسماعيلي.
وكتابنا هذا أملاه المصنف أربعين حديثاً من مسموعاته عن أربعين شيخاً من أكابر مشايخه وأعلاهم إسناداً، كل حديث عن واحد من الصحابة، بدءاً بالعشرة المبشرين بالجنة، ثم بغيرهم من الصحابة الأفاضل رضوان الله عليهم، وذكر الطائي رحمه الله ترجمة لكل صحابي راوٍ للحديث يذكر فيها فضائله ومناقبه ملخصاً من كتب المعاجم والتراجم والسير، وأورد عقيب كل حديث الحكم على إسناده من حيث الصحة والحسن العالي، وعزو الحديث إلى من خرجه لا سيما البخاري ومسلم أو أحد رواته من الكتب التسعة، وفي الغالب يقتصر على الصحيحين. ثم قام ببيان دلالات الحديث وفوائده وشرح غريبه ومجمله، وقام برواية حكاية مسندة تتضمن فائدة حديثية متناً وإسناداً، ثم يختم كل حديث بشاهد مسند يتناسب مع الحديث، يحث على الفضيلة التي يحث عليها الحديث أو ينهي عما نهى عنه الحديث.
كتاب في الحديث الشريف أورد فيه مصنفه أربعين حديثا نبويا على طريقة الذين ألفوا على هذا المنوال كالإمام النووي في الأربعين النووية وغيره، وجميع الأحاديث التي أوردها المصنف هنا هي من مروياته ومسموعاته في الإخلاص وصدق النية والأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر والأخلاق الإسلامية والآداب، مع شرح لهذه الأحاديث وهذه طبعة محققة.
