يأتي هذا الكتاب ضمن سلسلة "رواد المشرق العربي" المكرسة لأدب رحلات الأوروبيين إلى المشرق العربي، وهو يعد تحفة فنية وضعها عام 1904 الرحالة ومهندس التعدين كالفرت الذي فُتن بإسبانيا فألف عنها وعن فنونها 36 كتابا.
وترجم الكتاب عن الإسبانية وقدّم له الدكتور أحمد أيبش المتخصص في التاريخ الإسلامي والتاريخ الحديث.
ويعترف كالفرت في كتابه بأن مدينة غرناطة ليست سوى إبداع صرف للمسلمين المغاربة، فتاريخها تاريخهم جميعا بلا استثناء، وماضيها سجلّ لأمجادهم وذكرى زوال دولتهم. تلك الرمانة -كما سماها فاتحها- لم تُثمر وتتألّق إلا في شمس المسلمين الساطعة، ولم تذوِ إلا بانحسارها. ثم إذا بها في ظل الحكم المسيحي تهوي منزلتها من عاصمة متألقة إلى مجرد ضاحية فقيرة، وما هي اليوم إلا نصبٌ تذكاريّ عظيم يشهد على سلالة تلاشت وحضارة دالت وبادت".
أما قصر الحمراء فيصفه المؤلف بأنه بمثابة معبد الأكروبوليس لأثينا، ويقول "إنه أعظم تذكار حي قدمه المسلمون لأوروبا، وهو ينتمي إلى آخر حقبة من الفن الإسباني العربي، وذلك عندما بدأت بذرة أفكار المسلمين وثقافتهم تضرب جذورها عميقا في التربة وتبتكر أسلوبا يمكن تسميته بالأندلسي أكثر من العربي".
ورغم أن المادة المكتوبة في وصف المدينة وقصرها مختصرة، فإنها مفع مة بالتفاصيل الدقيقة التي تنقل روعة وبراعة الفن المعماري العربي وفنون النقش والتزويق في أرجاء القصر والمدينة."
