في عصر صغار التابعين-في حدود الخمسين بعد المائة-ظهرت الفرق السياسة وكثرت النحل وازدادت العصبية، فظهر الكذب والخطأ في كل الأمصار، فوجد العلماء عند كل فرقة اسناداً ورواية بعضها كان للدس والكيد للإسلام، وبعض ذلك كان للعصبية المذهبية، وكان هذا دافعاً للعلماء، بتأليف الكتب المختلطة في الأحاديث الضعيفة والموضوعة وعلل الحديث. ومن هؤلاء العلماء العلامة عبد الحي بن عبد الحليم اللكنوي الذي دون في ذلك رسالته الشهيرة "الآثار المرفوعة في الأخبار الموضوعة" والتي تحدث فيها عن الأحاديث الموضوعة في صلوات أيام السنة ولياليها، مبيناً اختلاف الأحاديث ووضاعها.
هذا وقد استهل المصنف رسالته بمقدمة تشتمل على ذكر أحاديث الترهيب من الكذب على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وذكر بعض القصص الموضوعة والحكايات المكذوبة مما ولع الوعاظ بذكرها في مجالس وعظهم واعتقد العوام صدقها عند سماعها عن قصاصاتهم. وذكر حكم نقل الأحاديث الموضوعة ورواياتها والعمل بها، ثم ختم الرسالة بخاتمة مشتملة على ذكر كثير من الصلوات المسطورة في كتب المشايخ، الثقات مع ما قيل فيها وما قيل لها.
