عندما نتناول بناء المشروعات وإدارتها وازدهارها (أو عدم ازدهارها)، فبالتأكيد لدينا في هذا الكتاب شيء جديد كي يتم طرحه. إن هذا الكتاب لا يقوم على نظريات أكاديمية، وإنما يقوم على خبراتنا، فنحن نمتلك خبرة في السوق تمتد لأكثر من عشرة أعوام. وخلال مسيرتنا هذه، مررنا بفترتي كساد، وشهدنا هبوطًا اقتصاديًّا حادًّا، ورأينا تغييرًا في نموذج الأعمال، كما مرت علينا الكثير من التوقعات المنذرة بنهاية أعمالنا؛ ولكننا حافظنا على نجاح شركتنا رغم كل هذا. إن شركتنا شركة صغيرة، ونحن عازمون على إبقائها كذلك، فهي تنتج برمجيات لمساعدة الشركات والمجموعات الصغيرة على تنفيذ مشروعاتها بطريقة سهلة، ومنتجاتنا يستخدمها أكثر من ثلاثة ملايين شخص حول العالم. وقد أسسنا الشركة عام 1999، كشركة استشارية لتصميم المواقع الإلكترونية مكونة من ثلاثة أفراد. وفي عام 2004 لم نشعر بالرضا بشأن برمجيات إدارة المشروعات المستخدمة في السوق؛ لذا قمنا بتصميم تطبيقنا الخاص، وهو: "بيزكامب" Basecamp. وعندما عرضنا التطبيق على العملاء والزملاء، قالوا جميعًا الشيء نفسه: "نريد هذا التطبيق لمشروعاتنا أيضًا". وبعد مُضي خمسة أعوام، ما زال التطبيق يدر أرباحًا تبلغ ملايين الدولارات كل عام. نحن الآن نبيع تطبيقات أخرى مثل: تطبيق "هاي رايز" Highrise، وهو أداة بسيطة لإدارة العلاقات مع العملاء، ويستخدمه عشرات الآلاف من الأفراد في المشروعات الصغيرة لحفظ بيانات المبيعات، والصفقات، وأكثر من عشرة ملايين جهة اتصال، كذلك اشترك أكثر من خمسمائة ألف فرد في تطبيق "بك باك" Backpack، وهو أداة الشبكة الداخلية (الإنترانت) ومشاركة المعلومات، كما أرسل الأفراد أكثر من مائة مليون رسالة عبر تطبيق "كامبفاير" Campfire وهو أداة للمحادثة الفورية في العمل. لقد اخترعنا أيضًا منصة برمجية لتطبيقات الإنترنت يطلق عليها "روبي أون ريلز" Ruby on Rails، التي تعزز مواقع ويب 2.0 وجعلناها مفتوحة المصدر.
