يتناول هذا الكتاب الاضطرابات التى تحدث أثناء النمو في مرحلة الطفولة والتي أطلق عليها في الدليل التشخيصي والإحصائي الخامس للاضطرابات النفسية DSM-5 الاضطرابات النمائية العصبية والتي تنقسم إلى: الإعاقة الفكرية (الذهنية) -اضطراب التواصل - اضطراب طيف التوحد -اضطراب نقص الانتباه/فرط النشاط - اضطراب التعلم المحدد- اضطرابات الحركة -اضطرابات نمائية عصبية أخرى. وقد تناولنا كل اضطراب على حدة من حيث النشأة التاريخية ،والتعاريف المختلفة والمعايير التشخيصية للاضطراب في الطبعات السابقة من الدليل التشخيصي وافحصائي للاضطرابات النفسية ، ثم انتهاء بالمعايير التشخيصية الجديدة في الدليل التشخيصي والإحصائي الخامس للاضطرابات النفسية DSM-5.
كما ركزنا على التشخيص الفارق لكل اضطراب ،وفي النهاية قدمنا بعض النماذج لحالات إكلينيكية مختلفة تم التوضيح فيها كيفية صياغة التشخيص النهائي ومبررات كل تشخيص.
