إختلفت الروايات في سبب تسمية المعتزلة وأشهر تلك الروايات أن واصل بن عطاء الغزّال للحسن البصري، أو إعتزاله للجماعة في مسألة مرتكب الكبيرة. مؤمن هو أم كافر؟ ومهما يكن في أمر فإن جميع المؤلفات التي دارت حول المعتزلة تكاد تتفق رغم إختلاف آراء مؤلفيها: أن الخلاف بين أهل السنة وبين مؤسسي مذهب المعتزلة (واصل بن عطاء، وعمرو بن عبيد) إنما نشأ حين إحتدم النزاع وإشتدت الخصومة بين متكلمي الخوارج ومتكلمي أهل السنة، حول مسألة مرتكب الكبيرة من جراء الثورات التي قام بها الخوارج. وعلى هذا فإن إسم المعتزلة إنما أطلق للدلالة على موقف أصحاب هذا المذهب كأناس مبتعدين مما يدين طرفي رجال الدين والساسة في وقت ما، ممتنعين هكذا عن الخصومات والمنازعات القائمة بين المسلمين، وإنما من إختار هذا الإسم هو المعتزلة أنفسهم للدلالة على موقفهم الخاص في هذه المسألة. هذا وإن أهم ما إرتبط بإسم المعتزلة تلك الفتنة التي إنطلقت من فكرة هل أن القرآن قديم أو حادث، قديم أم مخلوق. وقد ثار جدل كبير، وكانت هناك آراء وردود عليها. وهذا مثّل بحثاً من الأبحاث التي جاءت ضمن هذا الكتاب وذلك في سياق الحديث عن المعتزلة، بالإضافة إلى ذلك كانت هناك أبحاث أخرى وهذه لمحة عما ورد من أبحاث بصورة عامة: 1-بحوث في المعتزلة لكرلو ألفونسو نلّينو: أصل تسميتها، إسم القدرية، الصلة بين مذهب المعتزلة ومذهب الإباضية، حول فكرة غريبة منسوبة إلى الجاحظ من القرآن. 2-بحوثاً أخرى: محاولة المسلمين إيجاد فلسفة شرقية، نظرات في علاقات الفقه الإسلامي بالقانون الروماتي، آثار صاحب هذه البحوث نلّينو.
