أتناول في هذا الكتاب مسألة الدين تناولاً أنتروبولوجيّاً احمله على معنى وصف الإنسان كما يرى إليه الدين أو هذا الدين أو ذاك، ذلك أنّ المعنى الذي أرمي إليه في هذا البحث إنّما هو الأنتروبولوجيا الفلسفيّة التي تجعل الدين أو الأديان موضوعاً لها.
والدين، أو أيّ دين، في النظرة الأنتروبولوجيّة، اعتبره ظاهرةً ثقافيَّة في شكل أنظومة تعبّر عن معنًى هو قصد المطلق، فالغرض من محاولتي هذه يقتصر على تبيين معالم الطريقة الأنتروبولوجيّة في معالجة الدين.
ويقتضي ذلك، من وجه أوّل، الوقوف على المبادئ التي تقوم عليها هذه الطريقة الفلسفيّة، مع ما تتضمّنه من منهج فينومينولوجيّ أي ظواهريّ، ومنهج هرمينويطيقيّ أي تأويليّ، وتساؤل فلسفيّ، ومن وجه آخر، تطبيق هذا المنهج على الدين يقتضي أن يعتبر النظرُ الأنتروبولوجيّ الدينَ كظاهرة ثقافيَّة تقوم الظواهريّةُ بوصفها وتحليلها، ويحاول التأويلُ النفاذ إلى معانيها، وتسأل الفلسفةُ هل تدلّ هذه المعاني على وجود حقيقيّ للمطلق.
