توزعت الدراسات التي تناولت كتاب البخلاء بين الكتب والرسائل الجامعية والبحوث المنشورة في المجلات أو الإنترنيت، ولم يكن يكفي نوع واحدٌ من هذه الدراسات، لتغطية الجوانب المختلفة له، ولذلك قررنا أن نبدأ بالعمل، على وفق المصادر التي توافرت لدينا وحسب الإتجاهات الفنية والقصصية، أو الجانب النقدية المختلفة وأدواتها.
وآثرنا أن نتناول الدراسات التي تناولت هذا الكتاب بشكل منفرد أو حاولت أن تبسط القول فيه، وحول كيفية تناول هذه الدراسات في هذا البحث، وقع لإختيار على أن يكون بشكل تقديم الكتب أو البحوث للتحليل والنقد، كتاباً بعد كتاب أو بحثاً بعد بحث، من دون الأخذ بالموضوع بعد الموضوع.
إنّ قدم دراسة فنّية حصلنا عليها، حول كتاب البخلاء هي دراسة لمحمد المبارك باسم (فن القصص) في نهاية ثلاثينيات القرن الماضي، أي: (1939م) بعد أن أتمّ دراسته للأدب في جامعة السوربون، وقد كان متأثراً بالدراسات القصصية التي كانت تلقى حول القصصين الكبار هناك، فجاءت دراسته على شكل مدرسي، تعرض النماذج وتستنبط الخصائص، وتوالت بعدها الدراسات والرسائل الجامعية بشكل أوسع وأعمق، منها: (فنية القصة في كتاب البخلاء، لضياء الصديقي)، وأطروحة (السرد عند الجاحظ - البخلاء نموذجاً -، فادية مروان أحمد الونسة)، وبعض الكتب الأخرى، منها: تراثنا... كيف نعرفه، لحسين مرة، والجوانب السايكولوجية في أدب الجاحظ، لنوري جعفر، وصورة بخيل الجاحظ الفنية من خلال خصائص الأسلوب لأحمد بن محمد بن أمبيريك، وصورة البصرة في بخلاء الجاحظ، د. هاني العمد.
إنّ كتاب البخلاء واضحٌ في أهدافه ومراميه، في توجّهه إلى فئة بخيلة، غامض في إشاراته التي تحمل أكثر من غرض، وأن كثرة البحوث التي تناولته والإختلافات فيه، أبرزت غموضه وعصيانه على الإستسلام، مما يعدّ دليلاً على أنّه نص مفتوح، وأنّ الباب مازال مشرعاً للمزيد من البحث، وإستيضاح المزايا المختلفة له.
