يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى فهم الكيفية التي يفكر بها الناس، وإلى وضع مقدمة آنية وكاملة لأسس علم النفس المعرفي، فيضم سبعة فصول أساسية. يقدم الفصل الأول عرضاً مفصلاً لأهم النظريات التي ساهمت في نشوء علم النفس المعرفي، ثم يقدم تعريفاً بهذا العلم موضحاً اهتماماته وموضوعاته التي يهتم بدراستها ومناهج البحث في هذا العلم. ويتناول الفصل الثاني موضوع (الإدراك الحسي) لأهمية دوره في تكوين المعرفة ذلك أنه العملية الفعلية التي بواسطتها نتفطن إلى مثيرات العالم الخارجي. ويعرض الفصل الثالث العمليات الفعلية أو المعرفية مبتدءاً بعملية الانتباه ومعالجة هذا الموضوع من جوانب الانتباه الموزع والانتباه الانتقائي ومسألة الحيوية في العملية الانتباهية. ويختص الفصل الرابع بالذاكرة وتخزين المعلومات وبالتالي النسيان ذلك أن المشتغلين بعلم النفس المعرفي لم يواجهوا مشكلات أكثر غموضاً من مشكلة طبيعة بنية الذاكرة، فيعرض هذا الفصل التجارب السيكولوجية المبكرة في هذا المضمار ويتطرق إلى التطورات الحديثة، وإلى النتائج التجريبية في التذكر والنسيان. يعالج الفصل الخامس اللغة والتعبير والارتقاء المعرفي، ويتناول الفصل السادس موضوع الذكاء الإنساني والذكاء الاصطناعي من خلال ثلاثة مواضيع أساسية مفصلة هي: التفكير متضمناً تكوين المفاهيم والمنطق واتخاذ القرار والاستدلال وحل المشكلات كما يشرح ظاهرة الإبداع وتحليلها من وجهات نظر عديدة. ويختتم الكتاب بالفصل السابع الذي يبحث في الأسس العصبية للمعرفة محاولاً الإجابة على السؤال التاليك كيف تتلاءم دراسة المعرفة العصبية مع قضية العلاقة بين العقل والجسم التي تأملها ملياً كل من العلماء والفلاسفة على مدى قرون عديدة.
