إن تعدد تطبيقات علم التقانات الحيوية أدى إلى وجود تعريفات مختلفة لهذا العلم، فالبعض عرف علم التقانات الحيوية بأنه العلم الذي يتعلق بالتلاعب manipulation بالمادة الوراثية للكائنات الحية لغرض إنجاز مهمات عملية أو تقديم منتجات مفيدة، والبعض الآخر عرفه: بأنه "أي تقانة تستخدم كائنات حية أو مواد من هذه الكائنات لإنتاج أو تحسين منتوج ما من أجل تحسين نبات أو حيوان أو لتطوير كائنات دقيقة لإستخدامات خاصة.
إن الترجمة الحرفية لمصطلح Genetically modified organisms يعني باللغة العربية "كائنات معدلة وراثياً"، وهذا إصطلاح مضلل لغوياً؛ فهو يحمل في ثناياه معنى أن هذه الكائنات كان فيها نقص وراثي وقد تم تعديله فأصبحت محورة وراثياً، وهذا غير دقيق.
قبل البدء بدراسة مواد مساق التقانات الحيوية لا بد من مراجعة بعض المفاهيم الأساسية في علم البيولوجيا بالإضافة إلى كل من علم الوراثة والبيولوجيا الجزيئية.
وهذا الكتاب يقدم لنا أفضل شرح في هذه المفاهيم والمصطلحات.
