ارتفعت أصوات التشاؤم في النصف الأول من القرن التاسع عشر في أوربا، وعلت أصوات الشعراء المتشائمين في كل مكان: "بيرون" في إنجلترا و"دي وسيه" في فرنسا و"هيني" في المانيا، "لبوباردي" في إيطاليا، "بوشكين ولير مونتوف" في روسيا. وظهرت طائفة من الملحنين الموسيقيين المتشائمين من أمثال شوبرت وشوبان وستوين وحتى بيتهوفن كان موسيقياً متشائماً يحاول أن يقنع نفسه بأنه متفائل ولكن ارثر شعر بنهاور الفيلسوف الألماني طعن على هؤلاء جميعاً في روح التشاؤم التي طبعت حياته وفلسفته. وفي هذا الكتاب عرض لفلسفة هذا الإنسان. وقد حاول المؤلف قبل ذلك إعطاء القارئ فكرة عن الفلسفة بصورة عامة وبفروعها التي تعود في نشأتها إلى الفلسفة اليونانية ومن ثم للترتيب التاريخي لظهور أقسام الفلسفة. ليتناول بعدها شوبنهاور: عصره، حياته، فلسفته، ومصنفاته ليقود بعدها مقارنة بين شوبنهاور وأبي العلاء المعري مختتماً البحث بفصل يبحث في فلسفة شوبنهاور في الفن وفي مذهبه الجمالي.
