من الشائع أن أنواعاً قصصية بعينها ارتبط ظهورها بظهور الطباعة الحديثة- ثم الصحافة، غير أن هذا الكتاب يحاول أن يناقش هذه المقولة، وأن يضع الأمور في نصابها، بمحاولة إثبات هذه الأنواع ارتبط ظهورها بظهور الكتابة الأبجدية الميسرة.
ليس الهدف من التذكير بهذه الحقائق إدعاء سبق الشرق للغرب، بل إثبات أن القصص الفني لا ينشأ إلا في كنف معرفة قوية بالكتابة- لا الطباعة فحسب، وأن الثقافات الشفاهية قد تستخدم القصص الفطري لأغراض غير فنية، ومع ذلك فإنها تترك آثاراً واضحة على القصص الفني المكتوب إذا كان قريب عهد بها- إضافة إلى أن كل حضارة تسم فنونها بميسمها؛ ولهذا تراوحت كيفيات إنتاج النصوص القصصية عند المسلمين بين: الكتابة، والإملاء، والمشافهة.
الكتاب يدرس نصوصاً تراثية ذات طبيعة خاصة؛ لذا كان من الضروري اختيار منهج ملائم لها، يتعامل معها من حيث هي، ويلتفت إلى الجوهرى والثابت فيها. وكانت الطبيعة المحايدة- والانضباط المنهجي- للبنيوية الشكلية- خاصة في تجليها الأخير: "السرديات"- سبباً لاختيارها منهجاً للدراسة، غير أن الدراسة لم تتوخ الخضوع الحرفي للسرديات، بل عمدت إلى الاستفادة منها في عمومها، وعلى هذا توقفت الدراسة عند عنصرين أساسين الراوي، ورزمان السرد.
