يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن خطواتك الأولى، التي يتغير معناها مع تغير تجربتك، ويحتوي على (عظام) العديد من الحجج والملاحظات (ستجد عظمة هنا... وقطعة هناك)، ولكن الهيكل العظمي كاملاً سيكون ما عليك أنت أن تقوم به، ستجد الكثير من الأفكار واللمحات هنا، كما ستجد الكلام عن اللغة، حيث لا توجد قواعد، بل ستجد التجارب فقط.
فرضية هذا الكتاب مؤداها أن معظم ما هو متعارف عليه عن كيفية عمل الكتابة، ليس سوى تصورات ليست خاطئة فحسب، بل وضارة أيضاً، وهذا ليس إفتراضاً، إنه إستنتاج.
كما هو متعارف عليه أيضاً، يظن الناس أن الكتابة تتم بطرائق خفية غير منظورة، ولسبب ما، يبدو أننا نؤمن بشدة بالأشياء التي تدور في رؤوسنا وتخطر على بالنا، من دون أن نعرف أو نتذكر كيف حصلت، ما نظن أننا نعرفه عن الكتابة يبدو تصوراً، ويؤكد، بشكل عام، أفكارنا الخاطئة عن الإبداع والعبقرية، لكن لا شيء من ذلك يعني أنه صحيح.
ما أعرفه أنا عن الكتابة، تعلمته عن طريق التجربة والخطأ، وهي الطريقة التي تعلم بها معظم الكتاب، كان عليّ تجاوز التدريب الأكاديمي، الذي علمني أن أكتب بطريقة كانت غير مجدية بالنسبة إليّ (وإلى الجميع تقريباً)، نبذ ما تعلمته في الكلية - وتعليم نفسي الكتابة جيداً - وهو أساس ما عرفته خلال عمر من القراءة وحب اللغة، وأتت البقية من سنوات من الكتابة وتدريس الكتابة.
هذا كتاب مليء بنقاط البداية أو النقاط الأساسية، فهي تساعد بحثك بما يكفي من وضوح الفكرة في عقلك، وإيجاد كتابتك الخاصة، وإكتشاف ماذا يعني أن تكتب، أنا لا أقصد "الكتابة على طريقتي وكما أفعل" أو "الكتابة بالطريقة التي يكتبون بها"، بل أقصد "الكتابة بالطريقة التي أنت تكتب بها".
وهذه نقطة بداية، وقد لا تكون لديك فكرة عن الطريقة التي تكتب بها، أمل أن يستطيع هذا الكتاب مساعدتك على معرفة ذلك.
