يأتي هذا الإصدار من سلسلة إصدارات خاصة وهي سلسلة إصدارات محكمة غير دورية تعني بالتاريخ البيزنطي، والتاريخ الإسلامي وتاريخ أوروبا في العصر الوسيط، سواء كان تاريخًا سياسيًا أم حضاريًا؛ لتتناول القوات الحربية في مكة المكرمة بالدراسة.
فمن المعروف للمؤرخين أن الفترة من 570هـ- 923هـ/ 1174- 1517م شهدت اضطرابات سياسية ومنازعات متواصلة في منطقة مصر والشام والعراق والحجاز، في سبيل الوصول إلى دست السلطنة، مما كان له أثر في تمزق القوى الإسلامية وضعفها حتى استطاع صلاح الدين الأيوبي أن يجمع الشتات ويوحد الجموع عام 570هـ/ 1174م، حيث أعلن نفسه سلطانًا ووصلته رسل الخليفة العباسي المستضيء بالله، بالتشريفات السلطانية والتقليد بالحكم، فكان هذا هو مولدًا للدولة الأيوبية.
وفي ظل هذه الأوضاع السياسية التي شهدت حراكًا سياسيًا وجدت من خلال اطلاعي على المصادر أن هناك قوات حربية في مكة المكرمة، كان لها دور مؤثر في أحداث تلك الفترة. ومن هنا كان اختيار هذا الموضوع لإبراز أهمية دور القوات الحربية في مكة المكرمة خلال العصرين الأيوبي والمملوكي.
وبخصوص القوات الحربية خلال فترة البحث، أشارت المصادر إلى أن مكة المكرمة قد عرفت فئات مختلفة من القوات الحربية لحفظ الأمن والاستقرار بها، ولترجيح كفة على الأخرى في المنازعات الداخلية. وطبقًا للإشارات الواردة في المصادر التاريخية نستطيع أن نصنف القوات الحربية إلى فئتين متميزتين: قوات حربية محلية، وقوات حربية خارجية. وهي محل هذه الدراسة.
