لقد كان لعلماء المسلمين السَّبق في مضمار كتابة الرَّحلات كمَّاً وكيفا، فكتبوا رحلاتهم بأشكال مختلفة، مبسوطة ومختصرة؛ منثورة ومنظومة، وغالبها ارتبط بالرِّحلة المقدَّسة "الحجِّ"، وسمَّوها فهرساً؛ وتارة برنامجاً، وتارة أخرى اختاروا لها عنواناً لمعنى الرِّحلة، ولم يكن علماء المغرب الإسلامي ليتخلَّفوا عن هذا الرَّكب؛ فكتبوا كغيرهم: مقلٌّ أو مكثرٌ في هذا الفنِّ، بل يمكننا أن نجزم أنَّهم الأكثر.
فالرِّحلة الَّتي بين أيدينا قد تُعتبر من أكبر الرَّحلات المغاربية حَجماً، إذ طَرقَ فيها صاحبها أبواباً شتَّى من العُلوم، وحَفِظَ لنا بها الكثير من الشَّخصيات العلمية، وأتى فيها على ذكر العادات والتَّقاليد، والأنشطة المختلفة في عصره فيما زاره من المدن ورآه فيها، ووصف الأمكنة الَّتي حلَّ بها في المغرب والجزائر، وتونس، وكشف عن علاقة الأهالي مع بعضهم البعض بل ومع حكَّامِهم، فيمكن إعتبارها وثيقةً تاريخية نادرةً لفترة العهد التُّركي بخاصَّة.
من خلال ما أشرنا، تَتَّضح لنا القيمة العلميَّة لهذه الرَّحلة العظيمة، والتَّي تعتبر بحقِّ شامة في جبين المغرب الإسلامي وحتَّى في العالم، فهي لَبِنَةٌ لا يُمكن الإستغناء عنها في جدار التَّاريخ المغاربي؛ فعزمت هته الدار على إعادة إخراجها، وأشاروا على العبد الضَّعيف أنْ أعتني بها بالنَّظر، وأن أقَدِّم لهذه النَّشرة بكلمةٍ، فلبَّيتُ مبتغاهم، مع أنَّنِي لستُ أهلاً لذلك.
