شهدت المنطقة منذ مطلع القرن العشرين، تحولات كبيرة على المستويين السياسي والاقتصادي تمثّلت في تغلغل النفوذ البريطاني في المنطقة بشكل كبير، إذ أصبح قادراً على التحكّم في مصير دول المنطقة جميعهم. كانت نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية عام 1945م والسنوات التي أعقبتها ، بداية مرحلة جديدة من تاريخ المنطقة ، إذ ازدادت أهميتها عالمياً ، ولاسيما بالنسبة إلى كل من بريطانيا والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، نتيجة أهميتها الجيوإستراتيجية والاقتصادية اللتين تتمتع بهما، ممّا جعلها تصبح هدفاً حيوياً للدول الكبرى. شهدت السنوات الأخيرة من تاريخ المنطقة تحولاً هاماً في السياسة البريطانية ، تمثّل في إعلان حكومة العمال البريطانية عن قرارها سحب قواتها العسكرية من منطقة الخليج العربي بحلول عام 1971 ، والذي أرجعت أسبابه إلى عوامل اقتصادية بحتة. وهنا لابدّ من الإشارة إلى القول بأن مسألة الانسحاب البريطاني من الخليج العربي قد استأثر باهتمام العديد من الأوساط العربية وغير العربية وعلى مختلف الأصعدة.
