تعد ملحمة الجاوتشو مارتين فيرو للشاعر الارجنتيني خوسيه إرنانديث (1834 - 1888) من أشهر الملاحم الثقافية، ومن أكثر الأعمال أصالة في الأدب الشعبي الأمريكي الجنوبي، بل إنها تأتي على قمة الأعمال الشعرية العالمية الخالدة، التي لا تقل بإجماع النقاد، أهمية عن ملحمة "الإلياذة" لهوميروس والسيد قمبيدور" و "دون كيخوته دي لا مانشا" لميجيل ثربانتس و "الكوميديا الإلهية" لدانتي.. كما تعد من أفضل الملاحم الشعرية الحماسية الإسبانو- أمريكية التي ظهرت في القرن التاسع عشر عن السكان الأصليين من الجاوتشيين وعن رعاة البقر الأرجنتينيين، ويعتبرونها ملحمة الأرجنين الكبرى، هذا إلى جانب تشابه هذه الملحمة مع الملاحم العربية أمثال: عنترة بن شداد وأبي زيد الهلالي وأدهم الشرقاوي، وجميع هذه الملاحم تدخل في إطار صور أسطورية تتعكس فيها آمال الشعوب وآلامها.
