كانت أحداث الحرب العالمية الأولى 1914- 1918 قد مزقت الجزء الأكبر من الكرة الأرضية، وكان العالم قد أصابه الفزع نتيجة لمناظر المعاناة والحرمان الكامل الذي قاسى منه عشرات الملايين من البشر خلال أربعة أعوام.
وبعد إنتهاء أحداث تلك الحرب، استطاعت دول القارة الأوروبية أن تنهض من جديد - إقتصادياً - رغم عدم الإستقرار السياسي الذي صاحب معظم الدول الكبرى، وأبرز ما يميز الفترة الممتدة بين الحربين العالميتين 1919- 1939، ظهور الأنظمة الشمولية في بعض بلدان أوروبا التي عملت على تغيير ملامح تاريخ العالم لتلك الفترة، وفي مقدمة تلك الدول إيطاليا وألمانيا.
كما تركت الأزمة الإقتصادية العالمية 1929- 1933 التي ظهرت في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية آثاراً واضحة على معظم دول العالم، خلفت بصمة واضحة على تاريخ تلك الحقبة.
وكانت لأحداث الحرب العالمية الثانية 1939- 1945م، الدور الكبير في تغيير ملامح القوّة لدى الدول الكبرى، فظهر قطبان عالميان: هما الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية والإتحاد السوفيتي السابق، وقد أصبحا في ظل الموضع الجديد وحدهما القادرين على تقرير صورة النظام الدولي كله، بما يملكانه من قدرات فائقة، وبذلك تحوّل الوضع الدولي إلى صورته التي راحت تُعرّف بالنظام الدولي الثنائي القطبية، وظل الحال على ما هو عليه في ظل إندلاع الحرب الباردة، إلى أن انتهى ذلك النظام الدولي بإنهيار الإتحاد السوفيتي عام 1991، وظهور النظام الدولي الأحادي القطبية، بزعامة الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية.
