إن الصفة البارزة في الأدب الجزائري الحديث هي "الواقعية" التي تعكس الأشياء والحياة والتجارب الفردية والجماعية في إطار فني، فهو إذن أدب حقيقي كتبه أناس من صميم الشعب عميقو النظرة إلى الوجود، شديدو الحساسية بالصلات الإنسانية التي تربط بين الناس، تتطور وتتموج في أدبهم شخصيات متنوعة الأشكال والشيات فتبدو في صراعها الداخلي مع ذواتها وفي تفاعلها مع العالم الخارجي المستكينة لمشيئته حيناً والثائرة المتمردة عليه حيناً آخر؛ ولا أقصد بالإطار الفني ذلك الفن المجرد المتعالى عن محيط الكاتب فيعوقه عن تحقيق رسالته المفيدة بل الفن الذي يعكس الحقائق في شكل حسي والذي يصدر أحكاماً على مظاهر الحياة تلك الأحكام التي من شأنها إيجاد الوعي وخلق المعرفة بين طبقات الشعب في سبيل القضاء على عالم فاسد يدعمه نظام استعماري فاسد وتحقيق عالم أفضل وحال أحسن.
إن كتاب الجزائر يشكلون الطليعة الواعية التي فهمت الماضي ووعت الحاضر وتطلعت إلى المستقبل.
إنني سوف لا أعرض لجميع كتاب الجزائر شارحاً أو محلللاً آثارهم فالعمل أصعب من أن أقوم به بل سأقصر كلامي على خمسة منهم وهم: إدريس الشرايبي ومحمد ديب مولود فرعون وكاتب ياسين ومولود المامري ولم يكن انتخابهم على سبيل الترجيح والتفضيل بل تبعاً للظروف التي يسرت لي اقتناء آثارهم دون سواهم.
