يعطي الإسلام تصوراً صحيحاً متكاملاً عن العقيدة، التي ترضي عقل الإنسان وفطرته، ثم يبين مقوماتها، وطريقة المحافظة عليها، ويناقش أصحاب العقائد الأخرى بالحكمة والموعظة الحسنة، مع الأخذ بعين الاعتبار احترام حرية الآخرين، بعدم فرض العقيدة الإسلامية عليهم فهو يرسي دعائم مبدأها الإكراه في الدين، والإسلام يعتبر الحرية ضرورة من ضرورات الوجود الإنساني وليس مجرد حق يمنح له، وهي بحق المسلم فرض لازم، فالانصياع والتذلل لا يكون إلا لله سبحانه وتعالى، ومن هنا تبرز الضرورة في تحديد معنى حرية الاعتقاد، بمعرفة حقيقة المصطلح، وإدراك ضوابطه، وتلمس جوانب الحق التي تتجلى من خلال الضبط الذي يبديه هذا المصطلح، كي يحفظ للحق نصاعته ووضع الأمور في مسارها الصحيح.
من هنا تبدو الأهمية الكبرى في طرح هذا الموضوع والبحث فيه، فكان من المؤلف أن تناول هذا الموضوع من خلال دراسته لجلية الموقف الإسلامي بصورة علمية منطقية فكرية موضوعية، طريقة مقارنة يتم التوصل من خلالها إلى معرفة وجه الحقيقة العلمية وفق ما يمليه العقل السليم والمنطق السديد وتضمنت تلك الدراسة تمهيد وأربعة أبواب، شمل التمهيد مقدمة بيّن الباحث من خلالها أهمية الموضوع ومعرفاً الحرية عامة وحرية العقيدة خاصة، وفي الباب الأول تحدث عن القصيدة وأثرها في الحياة الإنسانية وذلك ضمن فصلين، وكان الحديث في الباب الثاني في حكم تبني العقيدة الإسلامية وتركها وفيه فصلان، وتناول في الباب الثالث بالدراسة طرق الردة بالتصرف والقول وجزاءها وجعله في ثلاثة فصول، والباب الرابع بحث في مشكلات تطبيق حد الردة على ضوء الحرية وجاء ذلك ضمن فصلين، وأما الخاتمة فقد تضمنت استنتاجات واقتراحات وبيان ما هو جديد في الموضوع.
