كان ما كان، كان هناك أطول شجرةٌ تعيش في الغابةِ، وكلّ أوراقها بيضاء. وفي يوم من الأيام، أتى طائرٌ أبيضُ، وحطَّ على قمة هذه الشجرةِ القديمة ذات الأوراقِ البيضاءِ. وما إن حطَّ الطائرُ عليْها حتى سألها: هل ترغبين في أن تتحوّلَ كلُّ أوراقكِ إلى طيورٍ؟
لم تعرف الشّجرةُ القديمةُ بماذا تُجيبُ. ورغمَ أنَّها شعرَتْ بالسّعادةِ في قرارةِ نفسِها وهي تفكر في عرضِهِ...
فهل ستوافق الشجرة على تحويل أوراقها إلى طيور، وتطلقها كالطيور في السماء؟
وهل سينفّذ الطائر الأبيض وعده للشجرة القديمة في الربيع؟
"ستنبتُ منْ رمادكِ شتلةٌ صغيرةٌ. وهكذا، ستنهضينَ منَ الرّمادِ مثلَ طائرِ الفينيقِ"!
«شجرةُ الطّيورِ» قصة متخيلة ومشوقة تشرح للأطفال بأسلوب مبسط أن حياةُ النباتاتِ تشبهُ كثيراً حياةَ البشر. فاحتراق الشجرة وتحويلها إلى رماد لا يعني النهاية أو الفناء، بل الولادة من جديد؛ إذ ستنبتُ من جذورها شتلةٌ صغيرة خضراء زاهية، تماماً مثل أوراق الشجرة الأم، وستكبر يوماً ما وتثمر وتحطّ على أغصانها الطيور لتغرد وتغني نشيد الحياة.
حاز هذا الكتاب على جائزة كتب الأطفال المصوّرة من المركز الثقافي الآسيوي التابع للأونيسكو عام 1993.
