يشكو تاريخ اليمن الحضاري من إهمال الباحثين المحليين وغير المحليين , إذ لم تحظ اليمن بالإهتمام الذي حظيت به بلاد الحضارات الأخرى القديمة في المنطقة , كحضارة مصر وبلاد الرافدين وسوريا التي شهدت مئات البعثات العلمية والتاريخية للتنقيب عن تلك الحضارات وإكتشاف أزمانها التاريخية وإبداعها الثقافي والمعرفي والعمراني و ولعل أول بعثة حظيت بها اليمن كانت بعثة " كارستن نيبور " في القرن السابع عشر من " 1761-1767 م " , والتي خرجت في كتابه الشهير " من كوبن هاجن إلى صنعاء " وأصدرت في عام 1962 م باللغة الإنجليزية , تبعها عدد غير كاف من البعثات الأثرية الأمريكية والروسية في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين , غير أن هذه البعثات جميعها لم تبلغ إكتشاف عمق الحضارة اليمنية بأبعادها التاريخية والثقافية , ولاتزال اليمن بلدا خاما في هذا المضمار , تنتظر مئات البعثات و آلاف الباحثين المتخصصين , ليكتشفوا البدايات التاريخية للحضارة الإنسانية في هذا الجزء من العالم , حيث تحكي الأسطورة الشعبية أنه بلد سام بن نوح , ومن أولاده تناسل آل قحطان الذين شكلوا البدايات الأولى لظهور الأقوامية التاريخية , منذ قوم هود وثمود وإلى قوم تبع الذين ظهرت معهم أنماط التنظيم السياسي القديم .
