لا فكاك من أن يكون العلم يشتغل على "تعليم الحياة الحق" علما حزيناً من حيث الغرض كما من حيث المنزلة التي يحتلها في سياق الراهن البائس للفلسفة. لذا فهذا العلم بما هو استئناف للمعالجة الإتيقية للحياة المشؤّهة لا يلتمس بأي حال من الأحوال التشريع الأخلاقي للممارسة الإنسانية باسم ما ينبغي أن يكون (das Sollen) . فالحس النقدي ـ التاريخي الحاد الذي يتخلل جميع شذرات الأدب الصغير، يدفع عن هذا "العلم الحزين" التورط في أيّ شكل من أشكال التبرير أو التسويغ المتعالي عن الواقع الفعلي والموضوعية التاريخية لحياة إنسان المعاصر..
لقد اتهم آدرنو كثيراً بسبب انعزاله بأنه مفكّر يسكن برجه العاجي. ولكنّ كتاب الأدب الصغير هذا يُبرز بشكل لا زيغ فيه أنّ آدرنو متورّط فعلاً في الإنسانية والعالم .... إنه مفكر ما انفك يعي أنه مدين بشيء ما للإنسانية وسيّان عنده حينما يُظهر سخطه على الإنسانية المضطهَدة وعلى العالم المسيّر، أن "يُرتاب فيه على الفور بأنه يلتمس إصلاح العالم وتحسينه" لأنه يثور ضدّ العمى والظلمة والتعتيم وضدّ "التأمل الذي يجمّد القلوب".
