يأتي هذا الكتاب كمساهمة في رفد كتب علم النفس بعامة والإرشاد بخاصة بموضوع الإرشاد المهني الذي يعدٌّ أحد أهمِّ أنواع الإرشاد النفسي، الذي يتخصص في الجانب المهني، من حيث تقديم التربية المهنية للفرد وتقديم المعلومات المهنية له، ومساعدته لفهم ذاته، من أجل تحقيق المواءمة بين الفرد بما له من قدرات وميول، وبين الإمكانات المهنية المتاحة، ليختار مهنته، وأن يعدَّ نفسه لها ويدخلها وينجح ويترقى فيها، بما يسهم في تحقيق التكيف والصحة النفسية، والفائدة والمنفعة الفردية والاجتماعية والمجتمعية. يتألف الكتاب من أحد عشر فصلاً، متدرجة من الحاجة للخدمات النفسية والإرشاد المهني ونشأته ومفهومه وأهميته وأهدافه وعلاقته بالتربية وعلم النفس، والأسس التي يقوم عليها، والتقنيات والوسائل التي يستخدمها لتحقيق أهدافه، ثم عرضنا أساليب الإرشاد ونظرياته ونظريات الاختيار المهني، وعملية الإرشاد المهني ومراحلها، وبعدها يتناول الكتاب موضوع التصنيف والتوصيف المهني وأهميته في عملية الإرشاد، والتربية المهنية والإرشاد المهني، وكان الختام في فصل الاختيار المهني وأهميته وطرائقه وعوامل الأهلية المهنية.
ولم نغفل تغطية الجانب العملي للمقرر، وخاصة في الفصول التي تناولت تقنيات الإرشاد المهني والتربية المهنية والتصنيف والاختيار المهني، ثم عرضنا أخيراً أهمَّ تجارب الإرشاد المهني في الدول المتقدمة كأمريكا وبريطانيا وألمانيا وفرنسا وسويسرا وتجارب بعض الدول العربية، وذلك بهدف الإطلاع على تجارب الآخرين والإفادة من هذه التجارب المتقدمة في تطوير برامجنا ومناهجنا وإعداد طلبتنا الإعداد المناسب،. وبعد...... فهذه محاولة قصد بها المؤلف أن يفيد منها الطالب المتخصص وأن يلم القراء من مرشدين ومربين ووالدين، والعاملين في القطاع المهني، والمشرفين على العملية التربوية، بموضوعات الإرشاد المهني وأهميته للفرد والمجتمع والدولة.
