شكّل اهتمام هتلر بالفنون في كثير من نواحيها موضوعاً للتوثيق الشامل؛ إذ نجد مثلاً الدراسات حول الكتب التي قرأها هتلر وحول اهتمامه بالهندسة المعمارية، وحول شغفه بمؤلّفات فاجنر الأوبرالية.
كما قرأنا عن تدخّله في المعارض الفنّية الألمانية الكبيرة بين العامين 1937 و1944.
ونعرف أيضاً ذوقه الشخصي في الفنون معرفة وافية. كذلك ظهرت أبحاث متخصّصة في هندسة ديكورات الأماكن التي أقام فيها هتلر. غير أنّه ليس هناك الكثير من المعلومات حول اهتمام هتلر بالأفلام السينمائية.
يُمكن مثلاً تكوين فكرة نموذجية عن ذلك الاهتمام عبر دراسة كلاسيكية وضعها فريدريك سبوتس عن موقف هتلر من الفنون بصورة عامّة، يُعلمنا فيها أنّه بينما كان هتلر يستمتع بمشاهدة الأفلام، لم يكن يهتمّ بالسينما كفنّ وأنّه «ترك لجوزف جوبلز أمر استخدام السينما لأهداف الدعاية السياسية»، نقطة ظهرت بشكل غير مباشر في دراسات عديدة عن السينما في الرايخ الثالث.
وقد أفرد الباحثون حيّزاً مهمّاً للدور الحاسم الذي أدّاه «وزير الأفلام والدعاية» جوزف جوبلز، ووزارة الدعاية السياسية بصورة عامّة أكثر في توجيه مسار صناعة الأفلام النازية. في هذا الإطار، غالباً ما يُشار إلى مشاهدة هتلر الأفلام، وتوقّعاته منها، ورقابته عليها.
كذلك نُشرت نصوص مهمّة عن صناعة الأفلام الأمريكية وردود فعلها تجاه النازية، وكلّها تُعرّج على اهتمام هتلر بالأفلام. غير أنّ الانطباع الذي يتكوّن لدى المرء من أغلب الكتب المهتمّة بصناعة الأفلام في الرايخ الثالث هو أنّه لا يوجد الكثير كي نتعلّمه عبر التفحّص عن قرب في تدخّل هتلر.
أمّا هذا الكتاب فيُظهر بالعكس أنّه يُمكن في الواقع لهذا التمعّن أن يُعلّمنا الكثير.
