يؤكد لينين طوال الوقت أن فكرة الإستحواذ على جهاز الدولة القائم وتطويعه لخدمة البرولتاريا المنتصرة أمر غير وارد، فهو مرتبط عضوياً بالطبقة المستغلة الحاكمة ولا يمكن أن يتخلى عن دوره في تمكين البرجوازية من استغلال الطبقة العاملة وبقية الطبقات الشعبية. وذلك بعكس الحال في الثورات البرجوازية السابقة حيث كانت السلطة تنتقل من الإقطاع المستغل للبرجوازية المستغلة.
وكان لينين ينوي أن يضيف للكتاب الدروس المستفادة من خبرة الثورتين الروسيتين: البرجوازية التي قادها المنشفيك والإشتراكيين الثوريين في فبراير 1917، والبروليتارية التي قادها البلشفيك في أكتوبر من نفس السنة، ولكنه فضل الإنغماس في قيادة الثورة عن الكتابة عنها!
