مع تزايد كليات التربية في العالم العربي تزايدت مراكز البحوث التربوية وظهرت نخبة من الخبراء والأساتذة الذين انصب جل اهتمامهم على ترسيخ الأصول وظهرت نخبة من الخبراء والأساتذة الذين انصب جل اهتمامهم على ترشيخ الأصول العلمية للبحث التربوي، وفي مرحلة لاحقة ظهرت توجهات نحو إدماج البحوث التربوية في مشكلات التربية كما هى في الواقع، وصاحب ذلك كله الاهتمام بمناهج وطرق البحث التربوي.

يتكون الكتاب من بابين، الأول بعنوان الأسس العامة لمناهج المبحث التربوي ويتضمن هذا الباب فصلين رئيسيين يختص الفصل الاول بالتعريف بالمفاهيم الأساسية لمناهج البحث التربوي ، أما الفصل الثاني من الباب الاول فيختص بالتعريف بمناهج البحث من حيث تعدد الرؤى والتوجهات العلمية في تصنيفها ، اما الباب الثاني من الكتاب، فهو بعنوان خطوات البحث العلمي التربوي ونعني المراحل في اختيار الموضوع ووضع خطة الدراسة، ثم جمع البيانات ومعالجتها واخيرا كتابة تقرير البحث وقد تم تخصيص فصل مستقل لكل مرحلة.
