وهب بن عمرو الصيرفي (بهلول) كان عالماً زاهداً وورعاً مجاهداً، اختار التظاهر بالجنون، بدل الانصياع لحكام زمانه الظالمين، وكان بهذه الذريعة يهزأ ويطعن بالنظام الحاكم بلسان الكناية والمزاح. أطلق عليه اسم (بهلول) لكونه جمع الخصال الحسنة في نفسه، وكان جميلاً وفكهاً.
وكان يتصف بالموقع العلمي والاجتماعي، والقرابة من هارون العباسي وهاتان الخصلتان كانتا السبب في عدم تورعه من هارون، وعماله، حتى أنه كان يدخل عليه في أي وقت شاء ويتكلم بالأمور الشرعية، كما تعلم من الإمام جعفر الصادق، فكان مصداقاً لحديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: "إن المؤمن يجاهد بسيفه ولسانه".
