تمثل دراسة اللهجات العربية تشخيصاً للواقع اللغوي في كل بيئة لغوية، وهي دراسات في أغلبها وصفيَّة تهدف إلى معرفة الظواهر المشتركة وتُناقشها وتدرسها دراسة علمية.
وتعدّ دراسة لهجات العربية ذات قيمة علميَّة لا تقل عن دراسة العربية الفصحى ذاتها، سواء أكانت تلك اللهجات قديمة أم حديثة؛ إذ تهدف إلى معرفة الظواهر المشتركة بين اللغات واللهجات ومن ثمَّ تحليلها ومناقشتها وتفسيرها تفسيراً علمياً بما يخدم اللغة العربية.
وتكشف دراسة اللهجات العربية الحديثة أموراً منها أن لهجات الكلام في البلاد العربية لا تزال تحتفظ بعناصر قديمة كانت شائعة في لهجات العرب قبل الإسلام؛ لأن هذه اللهجات الحالية احتفظت بكثير من السمات اللغوية التي عرفت عن القبائل القديمة.
وتسعى دراسة "اللغة المحكية في حوطة بني تميم" إلى محاولة التعرف على السمات اللغوية لهذه اللهجة ومقارنتها باللغة الفصحى، وفي سبيل ذلك فقد اتبعت الدراسة الطريقة الوصفية للرقعة المدروسة، إضافة إلى المقارنة التاريخية مع لهجة آباء ساكني هذه الرقعة الأقدمين.
وهذا يعني أن اللهجات المحلية العربية تختلف عن غيرها من اللهجات الأخرى التي بعدت في تطورها عن أرومتها: لأن اللهجات العربية غير بعيدة من اللغة الفصيحة بوجه عام.
