لا شك أن الأزهر كمؤسسة تعليمية دينية قد لعبت دوراً بالغ الأهمية في حياة الشعب المصري، امتد أثر هذا الدور إلى مناحي الحياة السياسية والاجتماعية، هذه المؤسسة التي استمرت ألف عام أو يزيد، تؤثر وتتأثر، تفعل وتتفاعل، تقاوم وتتزوي، تلك العراقة التاريخية التي تفاوتت في درجات الصمود والتصدي لجديرة بدراسة مستقبلها الديني والسياسي بعد الثورات العربية في عصر الإرادة الشعبية، ودعوات التحرر والعدالة الاجتماعية التي حملتها ثورة 25 يناير 2011م في مصر، وسارت على نهجها ثورات ليبيا وتونس واليمن وسوريا، إلا أن الخصوصية التي ميزت الأزهر في ارتباطه بمصر وارتباطه بالعالم العربي والإسلامي والعالم أجمع، جعلت من دراسة تاريخه وحاضره ومستقبله أمراً يستحق المتابعة والتحليل في المرحلة الانتقالية التي تمر بها الأمة، واللحظات التاريخية الحاسمة التي تكتب فيها شعوب المنطقة العربية دساتيرها المعبرة عن ثوراتها.
وقد قسمت الدراسة إلى مقدمة وثلاثة أبواب وخاتمة، على النحو التالي:-
الباب الأول: الأزهر عبر التاريخ، الباب الثاني: استهداف الأزهر ومحاولات تخريبه، الباب الثالث: تحولات الأزهر بعد الثورات العربية.
