تشير عدد من الدراسات مثل دراسة كل من: خولة أحمد (2000)، "كركورم جاكولين" Corcoram, Jacqueline (2000)، "هافت نمنديجو" HAFT, Nmandigo (2000)، حسين فايد (2001)، "كريجيت" و"نوميرف" Craighead, & Nwmeroff, (2001)، "ميرج" وآخرون Murg, et.al. (2001)، أماني الدسوقي (2004)، سوسن شاكر (2005)، سامية السعاتي (2006)، سامي ملحم (2007) بأن المشكلات السلوكية هي عبارة عن مجموعة من المظاهر السلوكية القابلة للملاحظة، والتي يأتي بها الطفل، ولا تتناسب مع المرحلة النمائية، أو الصف، أو المستوى التعليمي له، وتتخذ ثلاثة أشكال رئيسية: 1-عجز أو نقص أو قصور سلوكي عن الحد المرغوب أو المطلوب Behavioral Deficiencies، 2-إفراط سلوكي أو زيادة غير معتادة وغير مقبولة Behavioral Excesses، 3-ممارسة سلوكيات خاطئة في مواقف أو أوقات أو أماكن لا يصح أن تحدث فيها أو العكس Behavioral Inappropriateness.
ومن خلال ما سبق يمكن تلخيص إلى أن المشكلات السلوكية هي مجموعة من الأفعال السلوكية الظاهرة، والتي يتم تحديدها في ضوء ملاحظات المحيطين بالطفل، أو عن طريق الطفل ذاته، وكذلك مجموعة سلوكيات أخرى كامنة، أو مضمرة، يتم الإستدلال عليها بأساليب أو فنيات معينة وهي الرسوم الإسقاطية.
ومن هنا، كانت الحاجة واضحة وملحة نحو التفكير في الجمع بين قوائم الملاحظة، والأساليب الإسقاطية، وهذا ما يأخذ به هذا الكتاب.
