في 1911، خرجت روايته الأولى الطاووس الأبيض إلى الوجود، وفي السنة نفسها ماتت أمه وتخلى عن التعليم بسبب صحته المريضة، ذهب إلى ألمانيا وإيطاليا مع فريدا ويكلي، امرأة متزوجة، وقد تزوجها عند عودته إلى إنجلترا في 1914.
