يستعرض الكاتب امثلة كثيرة للمجتمعات التي يمكن أن توضح أسلوبهم في التعايش مع الاّخر، فمثلا المجتمع الأمريكي أو سكان الولايات المتحدة والعالم الجديد على وجه العموم يصفهم الأوربيون بأنهم غير متحضرين وأنهم بلا تاريخ،فمن الممكن لأي فرد من أفراد المجتمع أن يقيم لنفسه وزنًا، فليس من الضروري أن تكون من عائلة عريقة حتى يعترف بك المجتمع، حيث أن الأغلبية العظمى من أبناء هذه المجتمعات جاءوا من ركن اخر من أركان العالم، او أن اباءهم جاءوا من مكان اّخر في توقيت ما من التاريخ، وبالتالي فان اهم وظيفة اجتماعية لهم ليس التمسك بالعادات والتقاليد المتوارثة ولكن خلق فهم وتواصل بين مجموعات اخرى من البشر جاءت من أماكن اخري، وبالتالي فن سمات هويتهم لعامة لا تعتمد على التايخ المشترك ولكن على المستقبل المشترك،ذلك لأنه بالنسبة لمثل هذه المجتمعات يكون من المستحيل تكوين المجتمع بناء على خبرة وتجربة وجذور مشتركة، وعليهم ان يتوافقوا على هوية تسمح بالاختلاف.
