اتخذت العلاقات بين شمال البحر الأبيض المتوسط وجنوبه أشكالًا متعددة، غير أنها لم تنل التقدير التاريخي الكافي- من جانب التناول- من قِبل المؤرخين على مر العصور، وتعد الحقبة الزمنية موضع الدراسة في هذا الكتاب ـ ما بين فتح القسطنطينية (1453) على يد محمد الفاتح، والحملة الفرنسية على مصر (1798) التي سبقها استيلاء "نابليون بونابرت" على جزيرة مالطا- أهم الفترات في تاريخ العلاقات بين ضفتي المتوسط- الشمال المسيحي والجنوب المسلم الواقع تحت الوصاية العثمانية؛ إذ كان الصراع غاية في الشراسة للسيطرة على حوض المتوسط كونه معبرًا اقتصاديًا مهمًا، ولكن الاقتتال بين الطرفين لم يكن كل شيء كما ستكشف لنا صفحات الكتاب.
