كانت العديد من الأفكار التطورية قد اُقتـُرحت من قبل لشرح الاكتشافات الحديثة في علم الأحياء. وكان هناك دعم متنام لمثل تلك الأفكار بين علماء التشريح المنشقين وبين العامة، إلا أنه أثناء النصف الأول من القرن 19 كانت المؤسسة العلمية الإنگليزية على ارتباط وثيق بكنيسة إنگلترة، بينما كان العلم جزءاً من علم اللاهوت الطبيعي. وكانت الأفكار عن تحور الأنواع مثيرة للجدل لتعارضها مع المعتقدات أن الأنواع هي أجزاء لا تتغير من نسق مصمَم وأن البشر متميزون، ولا صلة لهم بالحيوانات. وبينما كانت التبعات السياسية واللاهوتية موضع جدل محتدم، إلا أن فكرة التحور لم تـُقبـَل بين غالبية العلماء. أسلوب الكتاب موجه للقارئ غير المتخصص وقد اجتذب اهتماماً واسعاً لدى صدوره فنفذت طبعته الأولى خلال أقل من 24 ساعة ومقارنة ببحث مندل عن الوراثة المعتمد على أدلة إحصائية تثبت انتقال الصفات الوراثية نجد فارقاً كبيراً إذ دفنت أبحاث مندل في مكتبات الجامعات حتى احتاجها التطوريون وأعادوا طرحها كدليل على التطور لم يذكره داروين في كتابه. ولما كان داروين عالماً بارزاً،فقد اُخِذت اكتشافاته على محمل الجد وأثارت الأدلة التي قدمها نقاشاً علمياً وفلسفيا ودينياً. وقد أسهم الجدل حول الكتاب في الحملة التي كان يقوم بها توماس هـ. هكسلي وزملاؤه في نادي X لعلمنة العلم بالترويج للطبيعية العلمية. وفي غضون عقدين، كان هناك اتفاق علمي واسع النطاق على أن التطور، بنمط تفرع من الأصل المشترك، قد حدث، إلا أن العلماء كان بطيئين في اعطاء الانتقاء الطبيعي ذات القدر من الأهمية التي اعتقد داروين أنه مناسب. وأثناء "كسوف الداروينية" من عقد 1880 إلى عقد 1930، اُعطيت آليات أخرى عديدة للتطور فضلاً أكبر. وبتقدم التخليق التطوري الحديث في عقدي 1930 و1940، أصبح مفهوم داروين للتكيف التطوري عبر الانتقاء الطبيعي محورياً في النظرية التطورية الحديثة، التي أصبحت بدورها المفهوم الموحـِّد لعلوم الحياة.
