ليس يخفى على أهل الإختصاص أن المنقول في كتب التفسير يكاد يفوق المقول فيها؛ أي ما أورده صاحب التفسير مما يعد فهماً له، فتتجه همة القارىء عادة إلى المقول تبحث عنه وتتلمسه بين عشرات الروايات والنقولات التي طالما مر بها ومرت به في كتب التفسير.
ولهذا الغرض ولغاية التفريق بين المنقول والمقول رغب عدد من علماء التفسير بطرح مشروع يهدف إلى تجريد المقول من المنقول في بعض كتب التفسير التي تبرز فيها هذه الظاهرة جلية، فوقع الإختيار على كتاب "في ظلال القرآن" للأستاذ سيد قطب، لأهميته من بين كتب التفسير، حيث يقع الكتاب في أربعة آلاف صفحة وثمانية مجلدات. من هنا جاء هذا الكتاب (تجريد المقول من المنقول في ظلال القرآن" عبارة عن "مختصر الظلال" فكان أن جاء هذا العمل الذي يمثل - بحسب العلماء - قرابة الثلث من التفسير الأم، وقد وضع لإنجازه العلماء الأفاضل خطة منهجية علمية واضحة المعالم بغية تحقيق الأغراض التي من أجلها بذل هذا الجهد الكبير ...
لنقرأ مقتطف مما يقوله سيد قطب عن "في ظلال القرآن":
"الحياة في ظلال القرآن الكريم نعمة لا يعرفها إلا من ذاقها، نعمة ترفع العمر وتباركه وتزكيه، والحمد لله؛ لقد منّ عليّ بالحياة في ظلال القرآن فترة من الزمن، ذقت فيها من نعمته ما لم أذق قط في حياتي.
لقد عشت أسمع الله، سبحانه، يتحدث إليّ بهذا القرآن، أنا العبد الصغير، أي تكريم للإنسان هذا التكريم العلوي الجليل؟! أي مقام كريم يتفضل به على الإنسان خالقه الكريم؟! ...".
